Hymn to Pan (www.GreekAlphabeta.com)   #HymnsofOrpheus

9/25/2013

Pan, the God of All, was often depicted as chasing Nymphs, so it would be appropriate for the Hymn to Pan to follow the Hymn to the Nymphs.

The notion that Pan (All) inspires "panic" reflects the sense of being surrounded on all sides in battle.

Theoi.com inexplicably dismisses the notion that Pan is the God of the universe "to pan," however, this hymn points to Pan as the God with dominion over the universe/cosmos and the four elements.

Depictions of Pan are an amalgamation of attributes drawn from humans and animals. He is depicted as a goatherd and hunter in the wilds and as randy and dancing and playing music on his "Pan-pipe."

Pan is enthroned with the Seasons/Horai, loving/tending goats and filled with wine, making music, dancing and singing, creating fantastic illusions/images, the Goddess Echo echoing his songs.

Pan’s sphere spans from the heights of heaven to the depths of caves and throughout the surface of the earth and the depths of the ocean and the fires of the sky—synchronizing their transformations from one element to another along with Phusis to engender growth.

The hymn ends with instructions to pour a libation/drink offering and a request to send mad panic away to the end of the earth.
